Finding a manufacturer is only half the battle. Before placing an order, make sure you understand exactly who you are working with. These are the questions every product founder should ask.

Finding a manufacturer is only half the battle. The next challenge is determining whether they are actually the right manufacturer for your business.

Many founders spend weeks sourcing suppliers, receive a quote and move straight into production without asking enough questions. Unfortunately, that is where many manufacturing problems begin.

Before placing an order, make sure you understand exactly who you are working with and how they operate. These are the questions I recommend every product founder asks.

Experience and Capability

  • How long have you been manufacturing this type of product?
  • What products do you specialise in?
  • Can you share examples of similar products you have made?

MOQ and Pricing

  • What is your MOQ?
  • Can MOQ be negotiated?
  • What is included in the quoted price, packaging, labels, branding, quality control?

Never assume what is included. Small assumptions can create expensive surprises. Always ask suppliers to itemise exactly what their pricing covers.

Process and Quality

  • What are your production lead times for samples and full orders?
  • Can you provide samples before production begins?
  • What materials do you recommend for my product?
  • How do you handle quality control and defects?
  • What happens if there is a production issue?

Problems happen in manufacturing. The important thing is understanding how a supplier responds when they do. A good supplier should have a clear, fair process for resolving issues.

The Relationship

  • Can you support larger volumes as my business grows?
  • What certifications do you hold?
  • What payment terms do you require?
  • Who will be my main point of contact?

Red Flags To Watch For

  • Avoids answering direct questions
  • Provides inconsistent information across conversations
  • Refuses to supply samples before production
  • Cannot explain their quality control process
  • Takes excessive time to respond to basic enquiries

Final Thoughts

The best supplier is not always the cheapest. And it is not always the largest. The best supplier is the one that consistently delivers quality products, communicates clearly and supports your business growth. The questions you ask before placing an order can save months of frustration and thousands of dollars later. Do not be afraid to ask them. The right manufacturer will welcome the conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Why ask for examples of similar products a factory has made?

Past production samples show whether the factory has the capability, machinery and experience your product actually requires — not just whether they are willing to try.

Is MOQ always negotiable?

Often yes. Factories will frequently lower minimums for founders willing to pay a slightly higher unit price, simplify their product range, or demonstrate long-term potential.

What should a factory's quality control process look like?

A clear process for approving incoming materials, maintaining consistency during production and handling defects. Factories that cannot explain this clearly represent a meaningful risk.

What are the main red flags when first communicating with a factory?

Slow response times, vague or inconsistent answers, refusal to provide pre-production samples, and inability to explain how they handle production issues.

Why does it matter who my day-to-day contact will be?

Knowing who handles your account and how they escalate issues is critical. Confusion about who owns the relationship is one of the most common reasons offshore supplier partnerships break down.
